These are non-negotiable deadlines - missing one means missing your semester:

No. You need an official admission letter (Zulassungsbescheid) to apply for visa. However, you CAN prepare in parallel: arrange blocked account, get language certificates, translate documents, gather financial proof. For APS countries, some students apply for APS while waiting for admission decisions (risky - only if confident about admission).
For APS countries: APS certificate (3-4 months). This is the longest single step and CANNOT be expedited. You cannot apply for visa until APS is issued. Start immediately after receiving admission.
For all countries: Embassy appointment booking (1-3 months wait). Peak season (June-August) has longest waits. Book as soon as all documents are ready.

No. German embassies do NOT offer expedited visa processing, regardless of how urgent your situation. Standard processing time is 6-12 weeks, and there's no way to speed it up. This is why starting early is critical - there's no "fast track" if you're late. The only variable you can control is when you START the process.
If your visa is approved AFTER semester starts (early October for winter, early April for summer): (1) Some universities allow late registration up to 2 weeks - contact International Office immediately. (2) If you miss late registration deadline, your admission is cancelled and you defer to next semester (6 months lost). (3) You'll need to inform university and request deferral - not automatic.
Prevention: Always plan for 2-3 months buffer. Don't book flights until visa in hand.
Winter semester (October) is recommended for 3 reasons: (1) Most programs start in October (more options), (2) More student activities/orientation in October, (3) Better apartment availability.
Summer semester (April): Limited programs, fewer international students, housing harder (Germans moving in October). Only choose if: (1) Your program specifically starts in April, (2) You're already in Germany on another visa, (3) You missed October deadline.

Common delays: (1) APS certificate - scheduled interview date 4 weeks after application, (2) University admission - decision takes 6-12 weeks not 4-6, (3) Embassy appointments - booking wait 6 weeks instead of 2, (4) Visa processing - 10 weeks instead of 6. Each small delay compounds. Planning to arrive 1 week before semester = gambling. Arrive 1-2 months early = safe.
