German embassies are extremely strict about formatting. Get these specifications exactly right:

What happens if I'm missing one document at my appointment? +

Do I need APS certificate? What countries require it? +

Yes, if you're from India, China, Vietnam, or Mongolia. APS (Academic Evaluation Centre) is mandatory for these countries. Processing takes 3-4 months. You'll attend an interview on your academic subjects. Cost: ₹18,000 (India), ¥2,500 (China). You CANNOT apply for student visa until APS is issued. This is the #1 cause of delays for students from these countries.

What photo size is required - 35x40mm or 35x45mm? +

35mm × 45mm ONLY. This is the biometric standard. Many students mistakenly get 35x40mm (standard passport size in some countries) and are rejected. Go to professional studio, tell them "German visa biometric photo 35x45mm white background." Costs €10-15 for 6 photos.

How much should my blocked account show for 2026? +

€11,904 minimum for the 2025-2026 academic year (increased from €11,208 in 2024). This amount is divided into €992 monthly transfers to prove living expenses. Use Fintiba, Expatrio, or Deutsche Bank. Account must be opened BEFORE visa appointment with proof of full amount deposited.

Do I need certified translations or can I translate myself? +

Certified translations ONLY. Self-translated documents or notarized personal translations are NOT accepted. Use embassy-approved translators. Cost: €15-30 per page. Required for: academic transcripts, degree certificates, birth certificates, financial documents (if not already in English or German).

Can I use travel insurance instead of health insurance? +

No. You need travel health insurance with €30,000+ coverage valid for Schengen area (NOT regular travel insurance). Must cover: medical emergencies, repatriation, hospitalization. Purchase from providers like Expatrio, Dr-Walter, or Mawista. Cost: €30-50/month. Must be valid for entire visa duration.

What proof of accommodation is acceptable? +

Acceptable: (1) Student dorm confirmation letter with address, (2) Rental contract (Mietvertrag) signed by landlord, (3) Host invitation letter (Verpflichtungserklärung) if staying with someone. NOT acceptable: Booking.com reservations, Airbnb bookings, hotel reservations. Embassy needs proof of permanent accommodation, not temporary.

Should I bring original documents or copies? +

Both - bring originals + 2 certified copies of everything. Embassy will verify originals and keep 1 copy for processing. You get originals back at appointment. Never bring only originals (no proof for your records) or only copies (embassy needs to verify authenticity). Self-attested copies NOT accepted - must be certified by issuing authority.
